Introduction
Bounces occur when an email can’t be delivered.
In this case, bounces are classified as “soft” or “hard bounce”.
In this article, we will try to help you better understand how to handle bounces and what the main guidelines are.
Types of Bounces
Blendee, as mentioned, recognizes two types of “bounces” that are handled differently.
“Hard Bounces” occur when an email cannot be delivered due to an invalid email address or an unexpected error during sending.
“Soft bounces” are recognized by the email server and are returned to the sender because the mailbox is full or temporarily unavailable.
High bounce rates
High bounce rates are often caused by outdated audiences or addresses that are incorrectly entered or imported.
Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have limits for bounces, unsubscriptions, and abuse claims, and Blendee must enforce these limits.
If bounce rates are too high, Blendee will notify the customer and, if necessary, suspend the mailings.
Bounce rate limits vary between Internet Service Providers and email providers, and change throughout the year based on incoming mail volume. Because these limits are variable, and to avoid giving too much information to spammers, ISPs do not publicly release their limits.
How to avoid Bounces?
The first cause of high bounced emails is due to poor list maintenance.
Keeping your lists clean is therefore the first step to success. Deleting invalid email addresses, for example, is a simple task but one that can bring great improvements.
If it’s been a long time since you sent a campaign, the advice is to review the user segment by deleting outdated information and then proceed with sending. This should help protect your audience from spambots and fake subscriptions that lead to bounces.
Does Blendee Handle Bounces?
Yes. After sending with Blendee, we monitor the delivery of your emails and move the bounced addresses to the Bounces section (you can export the list of failed mailings by single email sending activity). Email campaigns will no longer be sent to those addresses, but you can still access them if needed.
Sometimes Hard Bounces occur with valid email addresses. If a bounce address has recently been active with your campaigns, we won’t immediately remove it from your audience.
The bounce will be noted in the contact’s profile and will be counted based on the contact’s rating as we keep an eye on future activity.
